Provision within SEND

Quality First Teaching may meet the needs of children with special educational needs.  Additionally the following may be appropriate provision:

Cognition and Learning(C&L)

These children will be learning at a slower pace than their peers and may have difficulty acquiring basic literacy or numeracy skills, even with appropriate differentiation. They may need more practical activities than their peers to support the development of abstract concepts. They may need a range of specific maths and English interventions

Communication and Interaction (C&I)

This will include specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia or Speech, Language and Communication needs (SLCN). Also Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Asperger’s Syndrome. Interventions might include language rich environments and individual support for communication.

Sensory &/or Physical Needs (S/PD)

This includes visual impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI), multi-sensory impairment (MSI) and physical disability (PD). Minor adjustments may be needed to the curriculum or to the physical environment. These may be required as reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010.

We may provide learning support in small groups or individually to develop fine motor skills, coordination or a physiotherapy programme.

Social, emotional and mental health (SEMH)

A range of mental health problems may require special provision to be made e.g. anxiety, conduct problems such as aggression and oppositional problems, attention deficit disorders such as ADD and ADHD, attachment disorder. At Horsell Junior School we have a rigorous behaviour policy with clear rules for conduct which is supported with pastoral care.

The school also uses the services of an Engage mentor who works with children to support progress against targets provided by class teachers/SENCo. We use a school counsellor to support children, with a high level of targeted provision focused on the child. This is a specialist service and parental consent is required. There is a waiting list for this service and as it is a limited provision, SLT/SENCo will direct this on a needs basis.

We work closely with specialist services such as CAMHS.
