Spelling

At Horsell Junior School, we follow No Nonsense Spelling which is aligned to the National Curriculum. The children have weekly spellings to learn both in school and at home as part of their homework. They are then tested on these spellings each week.

We investigate spelling rules, patterns and exceptions to the rule. In class, children will revisit and review spelling patterns and rules to ensure they are learning new strategies and applying previous learning. We encourage children to practise their spellings and independently use resources to support spellings such as dictionaries to develop their own techniques of learning and spelling retrieval.

Information about weekly spellings can be found in the Year Group section of the website under homework. On top of weekly spellings, there are statutory spellings for Years 3 and 4 and Year 5 and 6 which the children are expected to know by the end of the year. These words are taught throughout the curriculum. Please see the statutory spellings below.
