Inspiring Creativity at Horsell Junior School
At Horsell Junior School, we believe that every child is an artist in their own right. Our art curriculum is designed to spark imagination, build confidence, and allow children to express themselves in powerful, personal ways. We aim to nurture the ‘God-given’ talents of every pupil by encouraging them to explore, experiment, and create.
Through studying a rich variety of artists from different cultures and times, our pupils develop a deeper understanding of the world around them—and their place in it. Art at Horsell is not just a subject; it's a journey of discovery, self-expression, and joy.
Implementation – Bringing Art to Life in the Classroom
Art lessons at Horsell Junior School are hands-on, exciting, and filled with opportunities for children to explore their creativity. Our curriculum is carefully built around five key strands:
· Generating Ideas
· Using Sketchbooks
· Mastering Techniques (including line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, and colour)
· Learning About Artists
· Evaluating and Reflecting
Each unit is designed to build on previous knowledge, allowing children to revisit key skills with increasing depth and complexity as they progress through the school.
Children explore four main areas of art: Drawing Painting & Mixed Media Sculpture & 3D Craft & Design
Art is taught every other half-term, giving pupils the time to fully immerse themselves in their creative projects. Sketchbooks are used throughout to develop ideas and document artistic journeys, creating a personal portfolio of progress and exploration.
Impact – Celebrating Growth, Confidence, and Creativity
Our goal is for every child to leave Horsell Junior School with not only a strong foundation in art skills, but also the confidence and enthusiasm to keep exploring their creative potential in secondary school and beyond.
We assess learning in a range of ways—from to sketchbook reviews and finished pieces—ensuring that each pupil's progress is recognised and celebrated. Art attainment is also shared with parents in annual reports.
By the end of Year 6, Horsell pupils will be able to:
Create original artwork inspired by their ideas and experiences
Demonstrate proficiency in drawing, painting, sculpture, and design
Reflect on and discuss art using rich, subject-specific vocabulary
Understand and appreciate the work of great artists from across history and cultures
Meet national curriculum expectations with confidence and creativity
At Horsell, we’re proud to grow not just young artists—but thoughtful, expressive individuals ready to make their mark on the world.
